Green Hosting: The Best Eco Web Hosting Company

This is not an ad. This is a testimonial from a long-term client of Green-Hosting.co.uk, an eco-friendly hosting company I have used for almost a decade, across multiple websites. If you are looking for a new hosting company for your website and/or emails, let me put you onto their wind-powered hosting plans, with incredibly fair rates, five-star customer service.

(Note: Even if this was an ad, I only advertise products and brands I truly like. Yes, I have rejected ad partners when I have not liked their products, and no, they have not been very happy when I did so).

Tales of an Eco-Friendly Netizen

I have been online since the day my Dad brought home a Windows PC in 1999. My first digital footsteps were made on Piczo, then MSN, MySpace, and Facebook. Today, I have your typical socials (Instagram, Pinterest, Vinted) and run this site, documenting more sustainable ways to live and dress. Out of all the online pursuits I’ve led, running my own website has to be my favourite. I like that it is mine and mine alone. I can add and edit content however I like. Considering I write extensively on sustainability, it makes sense that my website is eco-friendly too.

Why Invest In Green Hosting?

To host your own website and/or email address, you need to buy a domain and some server space with a hosting company. There aren’t really any eco-friendly domain providers, as a domain name simply serves as a digital address for your website. However, hosting is a different story. Hosting companies are responsible for most websites’ carbon emissions, as they are in charge of the electricity used to power the physical infrastructure (data centres, servers, networks, etc.)

Green-Hosting.co.uk powers its entire operation with renewable energy purchased directly from wind, solar and hydro sources. This is already a cut above most eco-friendly hosting providers, cutting out “renewable” energy from biomass, and making them vegan-friendly too.

Next, Green Hosting uses one of the most energy efficient data centres in the world. Their London-based data centre houses their servers, routers and cooling systems, and achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.09. The average PUE of global data centres is 1.54 to 1.56.

In addition to a more sustainable operation, Green Hosting supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, supports local charities across the UK, and holds both an ethical policy and environmental policy.

My Rating of Green Hosting: 10/10

As a long-term client, I can attest to the consistency and security of Green Hosting’s provision. Plans start at just £6/month, and come with unlimited emails, subdomains, and a free SSL certificate.

When I first set up Curiously Conscious, I was migrating my posts from Blogger. It was complicated, so I contacted their customer service for help. In response, I was provided with a test site ahead of publication. Over the years, I have had WordPress hiccups and all sorts go on. Their free Customer Service has been more reliable than some of the (paid!) web developers I have worked with.

I was actually prompted to write this review after Green Hosting’s Customer Service team spent time looking at my site. A PHP upgrade had tripped out a few of my plugins. I was given sound advice, had some spam code removed, and was not charged for it. (Even when I asked to be invoiced for the time spent!)

Since I started hosting with Green-Hosting.co.uk I have set up two more websites using their services. I also helped a client of mine to migrate to their cheaper plans (it costs just £25 for website transfer support).

Thank you to everyone at Green Hosting for making your service such a great, consistent, reliable and environmentally-friendly way to run a website. It’s a joy to host with you – and I hope this review will encourage you to do the same.
