An Evening With Monica Vinader & Amy Powney

Earlier this week, I celebrated the launch of the new Monica Vinader & Amy Powney* jewellery collection. As a fan of sustainable fashion and sustainable jewellery, it was a joy to celebrate the collection over dinner at Plates, in Shoreditch, East London, alongside Amy Powney, Monica Vinader, sustainable fashion influencers, fashion journalists, and the teams from Mother of Pearl and Tencel.

Monica Vinader & Amy Powney

I’ve been a collector of Monica Vinader jewellery* for a few years now, and I often gift their earrings and jewellery boxes too. The quality and design of Monica Vinader pieces are always beautiful, and even more so with the new designs by Amy Powney. In fact, this isn’t the first – or second – collection that MV and Amy Powney have created together; this is the third. It builds on the previous collections’ designs using organically shaped gold alongside keshi pearls. This collection is also an update on previous items, with the trademark yellow-gold tone of Monica Vinader’s main collection pulling through into this one, meaning these items go perfectly with all MV jewellery.

Keshi Pearl Jewellery

While this collaboration has been on-going for some years now, it is and remains the only jewellery collection I’ve seen that uses keshi pearls. For some background: keshi pearls are small non-nucleated pearls typically formed as by-products of pearl cultivation. Keshi pearls are often seen as ‘rejects’ and can become waste products from pearl production. It’s a delight to see these irregular and unique gems being put to good use, because I’d argue they’re even more beautiful than the uniform round pearls in more traditional jewellery.

It’s also a joy to see more sustainable design being applied in the jewellery industry. After speaking to local Brighton jeweller Rebekah Ann a few months ago, my eyes have been opened to the huge impact the jewellery industry has on people and planet. Why should our accessories be excused from the scrutiny we apply to our wardrobes? While I’ve discussed lab-grown diamonds and my own jewellery collection on the blog previously, I’d like to explore this area more in coming months.
