Wake Up With Me: Ethical Swaps for Your Morning Routine | Ad

What’s your morning routine like? I’ve recently switched mine up with a few great products across skincare, beauty, and lifestyle, that are equally good for you, and for the planet!

Instead of focusing on one particular item in a review, I’ve decided to style out my first ever get ready with me post. I’m going to take you through my morning routine, show you how these products set me up for a productive day ahead.

You’ll also notice that my working day officially starts at 9:30am – since I started working for myself, I’ve learnt to tailor my hours to when I’m most productive (and 9:30am start is early enough, thank you very much!)

Like you, I start my day in bed. It’s snuggly. It’s warm. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

Having switched to a memory foam mattress and pillow last year, I don’t think I’ve ever been comfier. There’s just one problem – my boyfriend and I can’t agree on the use of our blackout curtains. I love sleeping in total darkness because it helps to significantly improve the quality of my sleep, but he can’t stand missing the natural sunlight in the mornings.

To solve this problem, I’ve started using an avocado fibre sleep mask. This plush, pastel pink eye mask blocks out all light completely, and feels a lot like an extra pillow for my face! Even better, it’s dyed using avocado stones, meaning it’s non-toxic and great for my sensitive skin.

The other benefit of using a mask is that I have a designated switch-off time. My phone rests on my bedside table, and I’ll leave it there before cosying up in bed with my mask on. No more falling asleep while scrolling…

8:15am: Bathroom Antics

Once I’m up and out of bed, I like to get dressed and then stumble on down to the bathroom. My ablutions are pretty simple; a good warm face wash with a balm and hot cloth, and then toothbrushing.

I’ve been using a bamboo toothbrush for the last year or so (not the same one, obviously), and I’m so glad I made the switch when I did. The bamboo is naturally antibacterial, and doesn’t feel too bad in comparison to plastic. I also like this brush because it’s completely non-plastic, using nylon bristles that still give a nice firm clean. Plus, my dentist was pretty happy with my teeth when I visited in December, so there’s that!

Alongside my toothbrush, I like to use a baking soda-based toothpaste. My current pick is this turmeric toothpaste, which, I’ll be honest, sounds like it would taste gross. It’s actually really tasty, using peppermint and grapefruit oils for the taste, and turmeric to help clean away stains and relieve any inflamed areas.

8:30am: Styling

Once I’m all clean and washed, I’ll do my hair and makeup. I’m in the process of growing my hair out, and I really like putting curls into it with my straighteners (video tutorial here).

To stop my hair from drying out, I like to prep it with a few drops of organic hair oil. I’ll put a three or four drops into my palm, and rub my hands together to warm the oil before running it through the ends of my hair. I always choose an oil that’s high in argan oil, as my hair seems to love the richness of that nut oil more than any other!

If your hair needs an added dose of moisture, try running double the amount of oil through your hair when it’s wet, and then blow dry it on a low temperature. It’s saved my thousands of split ends, I can assure you.

9:00am: Tea & Breakfast

Finally, it’s onto tea and breakfast. There’s nothing better than a warm cup of tea to start the day with! On my busier days, I’ll drink it out of my 12oz reusable glass cup. It means I can sit and scroll through Twitter and Instagram before running to the tube station – and take the rest of my cuppa with me!

I’ve recently switched from an 8oz cup to this 12oz cup as I like to get a latte later on in the day too, and they require a bit more volume. (Quick guide: black coffees are 8oz, lattes, cappuccinos, and milky coffees are 12oz+). Most baristas I’ve come across don’t mind the 8oz, but I realised I was losing up to 33% of my drink every time I ordered! What a waste!

This glass cup is also a new favourite of mine as it’s totally dishwasher and microwave safe, meaning I don’t have to hand-wash it like my old cup… Bliss!
