Black Friday? Nah, it’s #JustFriday | AD

#JustFriday by Traidcraft | Curiously ConsciousI’m taking a stand. As Christmas approaches, there’s a certain feeling of anxiety looming too. My present planning still hasn’t started, and Black Friday is ringing in my ears.

But I’m not going to take advantage of the “deals” that are apparently coming. It’s almost cruel, the way it’s marketed: buy all your presents within a 24 hour window, battle against others to get the gifts you want, and come away with items you don’t need just because they were on sale.

The run up to Christmas should be one of comfort, family, and cosying up together. That’s why I’m teaming up with Traidcraft to declare that this Black Friday is actually #JustFriday!

Shocking statistics

Don’t take my word for it – Black Friday is bad for us, and for the planet. It causes overconsumption and in truth, awkwardness when you receive a present you just don’t want. You’re not alone though:

  • 24% of Black Friday purchases are based on hype and impulse
  • Only 30% of people keep and use all of their Christmas gifts
  • 87% of people receive at least one unwanted gift at Christmas

Make it #JustFriday

I’ve been advocating living a slower, more mindful lifestyle for a long time now, and Black Friday is one of the best times to do so. It’s a time to shop with thought, and buy with love. So, this Friday, try buying someone something they truly want, with a story that benefits others too.

Traidcraft is giving you the option to purchase items from its fairtrade and artisanal producers as normal, but they are offering free delivery on November 24th if you fancy buying something then. Here are my picks from their range, that embody more than just Christmas:
